Sophia Greene, MA, SHEC
Hi! My name is Sophia Greene (they/them) and I am a queer sexual health educator. I hold my Sexual Health Educator Certificate from Options for Sexual Health BC and a BA and MA in Sociology. I’ve been working in gender justice for over 10 years. I focus on providing sexual health education to adults but am trained in delivering sex ed to all ages.
My approach to sex education is one that is liberation focused. As an intersectional feminist, I know that having important information about our bodies, consent, and our identities is often life-saving and is always life-enriching.
My curriculum focuses on queer experiences and always considers survivors of gender-based violence. It is oriented towards demystifying the harmful narratives we are told about our bodies and sex. I do this using a systems-based perspective, which considers how social systems like patriarchy affect the way we are in relationship with one another and ourselves.
I am a white settler who gratefully works on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. I am thankful to have been taught about 2 Spirit identity and the principles of sovereignty by Indigenous educators and I incorporate these principles into my lessons. Consent in sex ed is always connected to body and land sovereignty.
My education goals are to invite my students to think critically about social systems and consider how their liberation is tied uniquely and universally to the liberation of their neighbours. My curriculum is sex-positive, survivor-oriented, adaptive, and centres how we can find pleasure, joy, and justice through accessible and relevant sex education.
